Considered one of the most interesting construction projects in Saxon Switzerland, the construction of the 5-star hotel “Elbresidenz” in Bad Schandau was a remarkable endeavor. Not only was the hotel’s location directly on the Elbe River a significant challenge for planning and implementing flood protection, but the client’s demand that the protective measures cause no visual impact on the building was equally demanding.
“We succeeded!” Whether strolling through the newly designed marketplace in Bad Schandau or enjoying the sunshine on the hotel terrace, visitors and guests alike would never realize that the Elbresidenz is fully protected against flooding.
The entire hotel complex was safeguarded against floodwater up to a height of 2.7 meters, in accordance with the site’s topography. Additionally, certain sections of the hotel interior, including its entrances, are completely secured against water intrusion. This applies particularly to critical operational areas, such as the kitchens and other facilities vital for maintaining the hotel’s operational readiness—even during a flood. These protective measures are essential for the uninterrupted operation of the hotel in emergency situations.
Likewise, ensuring a quick “recommissioning” of the hotel after a (hopefully never occurring) flood disaster was one of the primary requirements for the installation of the flood protection system entrusted to us.
